Bible Stories Coloring Book
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1980)
Author: Dover Publications Inc
Average review score:

Don't let the fact that it's a 'coloring book' fool you
This coloring book is not for children. This is why I rated it so low.

This is basically a set of stories from the Bible and coloring pages from a Bible printed in 1479 in Germany. It would take a very patient adult to give credit to the page by coloring it.

If you are looking for Bible Stories with illustrations for adults then this is a fine book. If you are looking for Bible stories that you can read to children and you, the adult are going to color the page, this is fine as well. But it really doesn't work well for children.

Bold Script Alphabets: 100 Complete Fonts (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1989)
Author: Dan X. Solo
Average review score:

Select Scripts from Solo
This is a great reference work for any graphic designer who likes to have fun. My copy of the book didn't come with the CD-ROM so I can't comment on that aspect of the publication, however the book alone is worth the investment. While the best brush script should be done by hand, this book is the next best thing. Within 100 pages Solo has a nice variety of typefaces, the best of which have that wonderful kitsch feeling.

This book is perfect if you are looking for a groovy sixties or fat fifties script font. However some parts of the collection have a few faces that aren't so great, for example everyone must have a copy or version of "Baloon Extra Bold". But there are a few jems every few pages, so you won't be let down if you are trying to get that fifties classified ad look - or need a script font that looks like it feel off of a Doors album cover.

Professional designers should take careful note of the copyright notice, as you are only allowed to use only six words in any project. While I find this limiting, ... one can't be too let down!

Buster Bear's Twins (Dover Children's Thrift Classics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1999)
Authors: Thornton W. Burgess and Harrison Cady
Average review score:

Review of Buster Bear's Twins
For my children's Literature class, I read Buster Bear's Twins and wrote a critical review on it. I thought that this book was cute and easy for young readers to understand because it taught simple lessons through talking cartoon animals. Mrs. Bear wanted to teach her twins to obey her and respect all of the other animals in the forest. There was one incident where one of the young cubs disobeyed his mother and was punished for it. I think that this is a good book for children to read because it sort of reinforces the simple lessons that parents try to teach their children. I think that if children can see how a character of a book gets punished for not obeying his parents, maybe children will see that if they disobey their parents they will suffer the consequences. On the other hand, the father is absent in the story. There was one incident that Mrs. Bear had to save one of her cubs from being eaten by their father. I wasn't quite sure if this was a good signal to send to children about their fathers. It really makes them look like the bad guy, and I am not sure young children need to read that fathers are bad while also reading important lessons. Besides the strange father part, I thought this was a cute book.

Butterflies Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1992)
Authors: Jan Sovak and Monty Reid
Average review score:

Butterflies Coloring Book
This is a pleasant coloring book. Butterflies are show in their habitat and good descriptions are given about their coloring and habitat. The backgrounds are fairly detailed, but in some this ways eliminates details in the butterflies themselves. Colored reference drawings are included in the cover for reference. I'd recommend this book for pleasure drawing for anyone school age and up.

Celtic Stained Glass Pattern Book (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1999)
Author: Mallory Pearce
Average review score:

Good Ideas
This book has some great ideas, but I found the patterns themselves crudely drawn. The images look like old hand drawn sketches that were enlarged to fit the page. You could tell where additional lines were added to allow for reasonable glass cutting, and areas of the patterns that should have been symmetrical were not.

I think a title of "Celtic Stained Glass IDEA Book" would be a more appropriate. I am not completely negative about this book. It has some interesting ideas, but just keep in mind that the pattern will have to be redrafted before getting a workable "pattern".

Cartoon Style
This little book is nice for cartoon style of Egyptian images. If you are looking for Authtentic style designs this is not the book.

Florida Architecture of Addison Mizner (Dover Books on Architecture)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1992)
Authors: Addison Mizner, Donald W. Curl, and Paris Singer
Average review score:

Florida Architecture of Addison Mizner
A thoughtful, and general overview of the work of this eclectic and influential resort architect. While the text is well written, the total lack of any siteplans, floorplans, and elevations cause this book to provide only a partial understanding of Mizner's work. All photos are black and white, and while this serves to keep the book modestly priced, it also severely limits the reader's enjoyment. Still, for the cost a worthwhile bargain.

Friendship: A Book of Quotations (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1999)
Author: Herb Galewitz
Average review score:

From trite to terrific
The quotations in the book encompass a gamut of variances. From those so profound you have to read them twice to those that you groan at and wonder what possessed the editor to add them. Overall the book is worth the money... all 80 cents.

Fun With Insects Stencils (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1993)
Author: Paul E. Kennedy
Average review score:

Creepy!
This sturdy little book has six pre-cut stencils. The designs are a good size for projects, and are easy enough that kids can handle them, but detailed enough to delight adults. I've used them to decorate windows and party bags and cards. The insects presented here are a butterfly, a honeybee, a praying mantis, a housefly, a beetle, and a dragonfly.
